The process of respiration in plants can be divided into two main types: aerobic respiration and anaerobic respiration. Aerobic respiration is the most common type of respiration in plants. During aerobic respiration, organic molecules, primarily glucose, are broken down in the presence of oxygen to produce carbon dioxide, water, and a large amount of energy in the form of ATP (adenosine triphosphate). This energy is essential for the plant's growth, development, and various physiological processes.
