Plants exhibit remarkable growth and development throughout their life cycle, adapting to their environment and ensuring their survival. The growth and development of plants are regulated by intricate processes that involve cell division, elongation, differentiation, and response to environmental cues.
Plant growth can be divided into two main phases: primary growth and secondary growth. Primary growth refers to the growth that occurs at the apical meristems, located at the tips of stems and roots. The apical meristems are regions of actively dividing cells, leading to an increase in the length of the plant. In stems, primary growth occurs primarily in the shoot apical meristem, resulting in upward growth and the production of new leaves and branches. In roots, primary growth occurs in the root apical meristem, leading to downward growth and the development of new root branches. Primary growth is responsible for the vertical growth of plants.
