Breathing is a vital process that allows organisms to exchange gases with their environment, ensuring the supply of oxygen for cellular respiration and the removal of carbon dioxide, a waste product of metabolism. In humans and many other organisms, breathing is facilitated by the respiratory system.
During inhalation, the diaphragm and intercostal muscles contract. This causes the volume of the thoracic cavity to increase, leading to a decrease in air pressure inside the lungs. As a result, air from the surroundings rushes into the respiratory system through the nose or mouth. The air passes through the trachea and enters the bronchi, which further branch into smaller tubes called bronchioles. Eventually, the air reaches the alveoli, which are tiny air sacs located within the lungs.
